Oshki-Miikaans

Oshki-Miikaans (A New Path) is a short album of original songs performed entirely in Anishinaabemowin / Ojibwe. The project integrates my creative practice in music and puppetry with my academic work in Anishinaabe Studies with the aim of language revitalization.

About the Album & Artists
JP Chalykoff is an Assistant Professor in Anishinaabe Studies at Algoma University (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario), and a member of Michipicoten First Nation. His creative work bridges language revitalization, music, and puppetry, all aimed at promoting the use of Anishinaabemowin.

Recorded at The Loft Studio in Sault Ste. Marie, the album was co-produced by JP Chalykoff and Sonic Sunshine, engineered by Sonic Sunshine, mixed by Jordon Zadorozny, and mastered by Noah Mintz at Lacquer Channel Mastering.

Oshki-Miikaans features six tracks (including two versions of Bezhig Niizh Niswi) with a lineup of talented musicians:

  • John-Paul Chalykoff — guitars, vocals, keyboards
  • Dan Beaupré — bass guitar
  • David Peredun — drums
  • Brandon Ruch — percussion
  • Nora Boyer — backing vocals
  • Plus guest backing vocals by Justine Chalykoff, BJ Swire, Derrick Boissoneau, and Beth LaPensée

Baabii, the friendly monster puppet, makes appearances throughout the songs—a creative element aimed at engaging listeners of all ages and to support the album’s mission: making Anishinaabemowin more accessible.

Oshki-Miikaans is now available on major streaming platforms, extending the reach of Anishinaabemowin through contemporary music.
